Alien Syndrome is a top-down shooter game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Game Gear in 1992. The game is set in the future, where an alien race called the Zorg have invaded Earth. The player takes control of a brave astronaut named Rick who must battle his way through hordes of aliens to save his fellow astronauts, who have been captured by the invading aliens.
The gameplay of Alien Syndrome involves shooting enemies and collecting power-ups as Rick navigates through levels that are randomly generated each time the game is played. Rick's weapons include a machine gun, laser gun, and flamethrower which can be upgraded with power-ups that are found throughout the levels. In addition to shooting enemies, Rick must also rescue hostages from captivity, destroy enemy generators to prevent them from respawning more aliens, and collect keys to unlock doors leading to new areas. As he progresses through each level, he will encounter bosses that must be defeated before moving on to the next level.
The graphics in Alien Syndrome are colorful and vibrant with detailed sprites representing both Rick and his enemies. The music is upbeat and energetic, adding to the intensity of the action as Rick battles against wave after wave of aliens.
Alien Syndrome has multiple difficulty settings which allow players of all skill levels to enjoy the game at their own pace. It also features two-player co-operative play which allows two players to team up and tackle waves of aliens together. Although not as popular as other titles on the Game Gear such as Sonic or Columns, Alien Syndrome still offers an exciting experience for fans of classic shoot ‘em up games looking for something a bit different on their handheld console.
