Zoop is a puzzle game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1996. Developed by Viacom New Media, the game was one of the earliest examples of a "match three" type game, where the player has to match objects of the same color in order to clear them from the board. The main objective of Zoop is to clear all colored blocks from the playing field before they reach the bottom. To do this, the player must use their cursor to move and rotate four colored blocks that appear at the top of each level. The player can then match three or more blocks of the same color either horizontally or vertically, and they will be cleared from the board. If two or more sets are matched simultaneously, bonus points will be awarded.
The game features five levels with different backgrounds and music themes ranging from eerie underwater caverns to pastoral meadows. Each level also has its own unique set of enemies which can slow down progress towards clearing all blocks on screen. As players progress through each level, new elements such as bombs and power-ups are introduced which help to speed up block clearing and score higher points.
In addition to single-player mode, Zoop also includes two-player competitive play where two players take turns trying to clear their side of the board while attempting to hinder their opponents progress with special power-up items such as “Freeze” or “Block Out” which temporarily prevent them from rotating or matching blocks.
The game features colorful graphics and catchy music that appeal to both casual players and veterans alike. With its simple yet addictive gameplay mechanics, Zoop is an enjoyable way for gamers to pass time with friends or just challenge themselves for high scores on their own.
