Super Mario Kart is a 1992 kart racing video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The game was released in Japan on August 27, 1992, in North America on September 1, 1992, and in Europe on January 21, 1993. It is the first installment of the Mario Kart series and the third installment of the Mario Kart franchise. The gameplay revolves around characters from the Mario universe competing against each other in go-kart races.
The game features eight playable characters from the Mario universe: Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Yoshi, Donkey Kong Jr., Bowser and Koopa Troopa. Each character has their own unique stats that affect their performance on the track. For example, Yoshi has higher acceleration than other characters but low speed; Bowser has high speed but low acceleration; etc. Players can also choose from four different karts to race with: Standard Kart (the default), Super Off-Roader (higher speed but lower handling), Mini Racer (smaller size but higher acceleration) or Turbo Racer (higher top speed).
The main mode of play is Grand Prix mode where players compete against seven computer-controlled opponents to win a cup by finishing first overall in four consecutive races of increasing difficulty. Players can also choose to play a single race or battle mode where they can battle each other using various items found throughout the course such as shells and bananas.
Super Mario Kart also features several secret courses which are unlocked by winning all three cups at 150cc or completing certain objectives such as collecting all five coins scattered throughout each course. These courses feature unique obstacles and challenges not found in any other course such as giant mushrooms and slippery ice patches.
In addition to its single-player modes of play Super Mario Kart also features two-player split screen multiplayer allowing players to compete against each other either via link cable or through local area network (LAN) connection over TCP/IP protocol. This allows players to race against each other or battle it out in Battle Mode using various items found throughout the course including shells, bananas and red turtle shells which can be used to spin out an opponent’s kart if thrown correctly.
Super Mario Kart was very well received upon release and remains one of the most iconic games of all time with many praising its simple yet effective mechanics as well as its fun multiplayer options making it a must have for any SNES collection today
