Hurricanes, The is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Virgin Interactive and released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994. The game follows the adventures of four stormy superheroes as they seek to save their island from the clutches of an evil scientist named Dr. Eon.
The player takes control of one of the four heroes - Typhoon, Breeze, Squall, or Vortex - each with their own unique abilities and weapons. Typhoon is strong and wields a hammer, Breeze uses her sonic scream to attack enemies, Squall uses his electric powers to shoot lightning bolts, and Vortex can fly and shoot fireballs. Each hero also has their own special attacks which can be used to defeat enemies or break down obstacles in order to progress through levels.
The game features 24 colorful levels set across different locales such as deserts, jungles, oceans and volcanoes. Each level contains multiple stages which must be completed before progressing to the next level. Players must battle various enemies such as robots, aliens and monsters while platforming across treacherous terrain filled with deadly traps like spikes and lava pits.
In addition to standard platforming elements like collecting coins and power-ups, Hurricanes includes puzzles that require players to carefully use their heroes' abilities in order to progress past obstacles or defeat bosses at the end of each level. As players progress through the game they are rewarded with new items that can help them on their quest such as armor upgrades or powerful weapons like bombs and lasers.
Hurricanes was praised for its vibrant graphics and smooth gameplay controls when it was released in 1994. It was well received by critics who praised its challenging puzzles as well as its innovative use of characters' abilities during gameplay. It also received positive reviews from fans who enjoyed its challenging levels and creative boss battles. Although it didn't sell very well in comparison to other titles released during this time period, Hurricanes remains an enjoyable title for those looking for a classic side-scrolling action platformer experience on the SNES console today.
