Flashback: The Quest for Identity is a 1992 side-scrolling platform game developed by Delphine Software International and published by U.S. Gold Ltd. It was released for multiple platforms, including the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The game follows the story of Conrad B. Hart, an amnesiac who must travel to different parts of the world to uncover his past and regain his identity.
The player takes control of Conrad as he embarks on his quest for identity, which includes solving puzzles, collecting items, fighting enemies, and exploring various environments. The gameplay is heavily based on exploration and puzzle-solving; players can use objects found in the environment to progress through levels or solve challenges. Items such as keys are used to unlock doors or progress further into a level; other items such as weapons can be used to defeat enemies or complete objectives.
The SNES version of Flashback contains different levels from the other versions of the game; it also features improved graphics and sound effects compared to its counterparts. The game starts with a cutscene that introduces Conrad's backstory; he was recruited by an organization called “the Morphs” who gave him enhanced abilities using a special device called “the Cylinder” before erasing all memories of his past life.
Conrad then begins his journey across several planets including Titan (a moon orbiting Saturn), Earth, Prehisto (a prehistoric planet), and Ghenon (an alien planet). Along the way he encounters various characters who aid him in his quest for identity while helping him battle against hostile aliens known as Morphs. He eventually discovers that his true identity is Johnathan Barnak, an agent from a secret government agency sent to investigate the Morphs’ activities on Prehisto and Ghenon before being captured by them and having his memory erased.
At the end of the game, Conrad defeats General Kalthar (the leader of the Morphs) and regains his memory after being injected with a serum created by Professor Pons (one of Barnak's allies). With this knowledge he is finally able to reclaim his true identity as Jonathan Barnak and return home victorious after completing his mission.
Flashback: The Quest for Identity is widely regarded as one of the best games released for the SNES console, praised for its innovative gameplay mechanics, atmospheric soundtrack, detailed graphics, and engaging storyline. It received numerous awards upon release including GameFan Magazine's “Game Of The Year Award” in 1993 and earned high ratings from critics upon its launch making it one of the most successful titles released during that time period.
