The basic premise of Brutal - Paws of Fury is that a martial arts tournament has been announced on an island known as Paw Island. Eight fighters have been invited to compete in the tournament and they must fight their way through several stages, each featuring different opponents and challenges, before they reach the final stage and face off against the mysterious champion who awaits them there.

Players can choose from one of eight unique characters, each with their own special moves, combos, and abilities. These characters are: Chang Wu Fei (a Chinese monk), Kato (an American boxer), Satori (a Japanese sumo wrestler), Tae Kwon D'oh (a Korean master), Baboon (an African warrior), Tiger Claw (a Native American shaman), White Raven (an Amazonian princess) and Lord Zuul (the mysterious champion). Each character has their own special story that is revealed as they progress through the tournament.

Each stage features a variety of opponents that must be defeated before progressing to the next one. As players defeat enemies they gain experience points which can be used to upgrade their character's health, strength, speed and energy levels. This gives players more options when it comes to taking on stronger opponents later in the game.

The graphics in Brutal - Paws of Fury are quite good for its time; there is a bright cartoon-like look to everything which adds to its charm and makes it stand out from other fighting games from this era. The sound effects are also quite good; each character has their own distinct theme music which helps set them apart and adds to the overall atmosphere of the game.
