Assault Suits Valken, also known as Cybernator in North America, is a side-scrolling mecha action video game developed by NCS Masaya and published by Konami for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992. The game is set in the future where Earth has been taken over by a powerful enemy force known as the "JAM". The player takes control of an Assault Suit (AS), a heavily armed mechanized suit designed to combat the JAM forces.
The gameplay of Assault Suits Valken is mission-based. Each mission consists of completing objectives such as destroying specific targets or rescuing hostages while avoiding enemy fire and environmental hazards. The player's AS can be equipped with various weapons such as missiles, lasers, and flamethrowers which can be used to destroy enemies or objects in the environment. The AS also has a limited supply of fuel which must be replenished by finding fuel tanks scattered throughout levels.
The player's AS can also perform several maneuvers to avoid enemy fire or reach higher ledges including dashing, double jumping, and wall clinging. Enemies range from small infantry units to giant robots that require multiple hits to take down. Every level culminates with a boss fight that must be defeated before progressing to the next mission.
Assault Suits Valken features detailed graphics and animations for both the player's AS and enemies. The game also features an impressive soundtrack composed by Masanori Hikichi composed entirely on synthesizers for an immersive experience. Upon release, Assault Suits Valken was praised for its visuals, challenging gameplay, and varied mission objectives leading it to become one of the most popular games on the SNES platform at the time of its release.
