Race America is an arcade-style racing game developed and published by Taito for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The game was released in North America in 1989. The objective of the game is to race around a track as quickly as possible while avoiding obstacles, other cars, and collecting power-ups.
The game features 8 different tracks that are set across various environments such as deserts, forests, snowfields, canyons, and cityscapes. The player can choose from three different vehicles: a sports car, a van, or a hot rod. Each vehicle has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, the sports car is fast but not very durable; the van is slow but is more durable; and the hot rod offers good speed and durability. Players can also choose from three levels of difficulty: Easy, Normal or Hard.
During each race, players must avoid obstacles such as rocks and oil slicks while also trying to outrace their opponents. Power-ups are scattered throughout the track which give players temporary boosts in speed or invincibility. Additionally, players can collect coins which can be used to purchase upgrades for their vehicles such as better tires or increased acceleration.
The visuals of Race America are relatively simple but still detailed enough to provide an immersive experience for gamers. The music consists of upbeat techno tunes that fit the tone of the game perfectly. Overall, Race America offers an enjoyable racing experience with plenty of replay value due to its multiple tracks and upgradeable vehicles.
