Bird Week is an event that was hosted by Nintendo in the late 1980s for its popular NES console. The goal of the event was to promote the release of a series of NES games featuring birds as their main characters. The event ran from August 11th to August 17th, and featured special discounts on the bird-themed games, contests and giveaways, and other fun activities.
The first game to be released during Bird Week was The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, which featured a bird character named Triforce. This game was followed by Duck Hunt, one of the most popular NES titles ever released. In this game, players used a light gun to shoot ducks out of the sky while being chased by a dog. Other bird-themed games included Kid Icarus, Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos, and Super Mario Bros. 3.
Throughout Bird Week, Nintendo held various contests and giveaways related to the bird-themed games. Prizes included Nintendo products such as consoles and accessories as well as free copies of all five bird-themed games released during the event. Additionally, special promotions were held at participating retailers where customers could purchase discounted copies of each game separately or as a bundle package for a lower price than usual.
In addition to these activities, Bird Week also featured several fun events that encouraged people to interact with each other in order to win prizes or gain access to exclusive content related to the games. These events included trivia contests about birds and their habitats as well as scavenger hunts where participants had to find certain items in order to win prizes or unlock bonus content in one of the bird-themed games.
The success of Bird Week led Nintendo to host similar events for other popular franchises such as Mario and Donkey Kong over the years. While these events have since been replaced by modern digital promotions such as downloadable content (DLC) packs and special offers through online stores like Steam or Xbox Live Marketplace, Bird Week remains an important part of gaming history that still resonates with many gamers today who fondly remember playing some of their favorite titles during this exciting week dedicated entirely to birds!
