Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is an action-adventure game released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989. Developed by Advance Communication Company and published by Bandai, it was based on the 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. It is one of several games based on the classic novel.
The game follows the basic storyline of the novella, with a few changes to make it more suitable for adaptation into a video game format. The player takes on the role of Dr. Henry Jekyll, a scientist who has created a mysterious potion that can transform him into his evil alter ego, Mr. Hyde. The goal of the game is to collect five ingredients for another potion that will rid Jekyll of his transformations forever; however, along the way he must battle enemies such as street thugs, zombies, and even Jack the Ripper himself in order to achieve this goal.
Gameplay in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde consists primarily of side-scrolling action sequences where players must navigate through various levels while avoiding obstacles and enemies in order to progress further in the game. Players can switch between Jekyll and Hyde at any time during gameplay in order to gain access to different abilities; for example, Hyde can move faster than Jekyll but cannot jump as high or attack as powerfully as his alter ego can with his cane weapon. There are also puzzle elements scattered throughout each level which require players to use both characters’ abilities in order to progress further; these puzzles range from moving objects around to navigating mazes without getting caught by patrolling monsters or police officers.
In addition to its main story mode, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde also includes two bonus levels where players can compete against each other for higher scores or collect items that increase their score multiplier when collected consecutively; these bonus levels are accessed via passwords entered at specific points during gameplay which transport players directly into them without having to restart from scratch like they would if they chose not to enter a password at all (passwords are found throughout each level).
Overall, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is an interesting adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel that offers a unique blend of action-adventure gaming with some light puzzle elements thrown in for good measure; its challenging yet enjoyable gameplay along with its faithful recreation of the source material make it an enjoyable experience for fans of both genres alike!
