Double Dragon II: The Revenge is an action-adventure side-scrolling beat 'em up video game developed by Technos Japan and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1988.
It is the second title in the Double Dragon series, following the original Double Dragon from two years before.
The game follows Billy and Jimmy Lee, twin brothers who seek revenge against a band of thugs known as the Black Warriors for kidnapping Marian, their common love interest.
The gameplay of Double Dragon II: The Revenge is similar to that of its predecessor, with some minor changes to add variety and challenge.
Players take control of either Billy or Jimmy Lee as they fight through enemy-infested levels filled with obstacles and traps.
As usual, players can punch, kick, jump and use various weapons to defeat enemies; however, they can now also perform mid-air kicks while jumping to attack multiple foes at once.
Additionally, players can now pick up items such as dynamite sticks which they can throw at enemies in order to damage them from a distance.
There are also new power-ups available throughout the game which grant temporary invincibility or increased strength when used.
The level design in Double Dragon II: The Revenge has been improved significantly over its predecessor; levels are much longer and more varied than before, featuring branching paths that lead to bonus stages or hidden power-ups.
Additionally, each stage features a unique boss character which must be defeated before moving on; these bosses are generally much tougher than regular enemies and require more strategy to defeat them effectively.
One unique feature of Double Dragon II: The Revenge is its two-player cooperative mode; this allows two players to team up together and work together towards a common goal – defeating all of the stages’ bosses.
Overall, Double Dragon II: The Revenge is an excellent sequel to the original game which improves upon it in almost every way.
With better level designs, new moves and power-ups available throughout the game as well as an improved two-player cooperative mode; this makes for an even more enjoyable experience than before.
While not quite reaching the heights of other NES classics such as Super Mario Bros., it still stands out as one of best titles on the console due to its solid gameplay mechanics and timeless appeal
