Double Dragon is one of the most iconic and influential video games of all time.
The game was originally released in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and quickly became a smash hit, selling millions of copies worldwide.
Developed by Technōs Japan, Double Dragon was the first beat 'em up game to feature two-player cooperative play, allowing players to team up with a friend and battle their way through a series of levels filled with enemies.
The game's story follows Billy and Jimmy Lee, twin brothers who must rescue Billy's girlfriend Marian from the clutches of an evil street gang known as The Black Warriors.
Gameplay in Double Dragon consists of side-scrolling action where players must fight their way through hordes of enemies using various martial arts techniques.
Players can punch, kick, jump kick, elbow strike or throw their opponents in order to defeat them.
In addition to basic attacks, players can also pick up weapons such as baseball bats or whips that will give them an edge against tougher foes.
As they progress through the game, players will encounter bosses at the end of each level which they must defeat in order to move on.
The original NES version of Double Dragon features 8 levels set in locations ranging from city streets and alleyways to forests and mountainsides.
As they make their way through each level, players must battle enemy gangs such as The Black Warriors and Mad Monks while avoiding obstacles like barrels and fireballs thrown by bosses.
Depending on which difficulty setting is chosen at the beginning of the game, players may also be able to access hidden bonus stages that offer additional challenges such as defeating multiple enemies at once or navigating mazes filled with traps.
Double Dragon has become an arcade classic over the years due its innovative gameplay mechanics and simple yet engaging storyline.
It spawned several sequels including Double Dragon II: The Revenge (1989), Super Double Dragon (1992), Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone (1991) and more recently Double Dragon Neon (2012).
There have also been numerous ports to other gaming systems including Sega Master System, Commodore 64, Amiga 500/1200/CD32/CDTV/CD32+, Atari ST/TT/Falcon030 as well as various mobile platforms such as iOS and Android devices.
The success of Double Dragon has made it one of the most popular video games ever created.
Its influence can be seen in many modern games such as Streets Of Rage 2 (1992), River City Ransom (1989) Final Fight (1989) and many others that feature similar side-scrolling beat 'em up gameplay mechanics combined with cooperative multiplayer options.
With its iconic characters like Billy & Jimmy Lee plus exciting action-packed levels filled with challenging enemies to fight against; it’s easy to see why this classic NES title continues to remain popular among gamers even after more than 30 years since its initial release!
