Circus Charlie is a classic side-scrolling platform video game developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1984. The game was also released for various other platforms, including the Commodore 64, MSX, and ZX Spectrum home computers. It was one of the first popular NES games to be released in North America.
In Circus Charlie, players take control of the titular character as he performs various circus acts, such as tightrope walking, trapeze swinging, lion taming, and clown juggling. The goal of each stage is to successfully complete all of the acts without losing all three lives or running out of time. As players progress through each stage, they are rewarded with bonus points and extra lives. Some stages have bonus items that can be collected for additional points.
The game consists of six stages: Tightrope Walking, Trapeze Swinging, Lion Taming, Clown Juggling, Cannonball Jumping and High Wire Act. Each stage has its own unique set of obstacles and hazards that must be avoided or conquered in order to succeed. For example, during Tightrope Walking Charlie must balance himself on a rope while avoiding bouncing balls thrown by clowns; during Trapeze Swinging Charlie must swing from one trapeze bar to another while avoiding obstacles such as fire rings; during Lion Taming Charlie must jump over lions while avoiding their fiery breath; during Clown Juggling Charlie must juggle bombs while avoiding falling logs; during Cannonball Jumping Charlie must leap over cannonballs fired from cannons; and during High Wire Act Charlie must dodge flying birds while balancing himself on a high wire.
In addition to these stages there is also a Bonus Stage which can be accessed after completing all six main stages. In this stage players are presented with a grid filled with stars which they can collect for bonus points before being transported back to the beginning of the level.
Circus Charlie is an excellent example of early platform gaming at its best. The colorful graphics and catchy music make it an enjoyable experience even today – especially when playing with friends! The challenging yet rewarding gameplay makes it an ideal choice for both casual gamers looking for some quick fun or hardcore gamers looking for something more intense.
