Bill Elliott’s NASCAR Challenge is a racing game developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1992. The game was licensed by NASCAR and features actual drivers, tracks, and cars from the 1991 season. It was one of the first games to feature realistic NASCAR racing on consoles.
The game begins with players choosing their driver from a selection of twelve real-life NASCAR drivers including Bill Elliott, Dale Earnhardt, Darrell Waltrip, Rusty Wallace, Terry Labonte, Ricky Rudd, Davey Allison, Alan Kulwicki, Ken Schrader, Kyle Petty, Sterling Marlin and Harry Gant. Each driver has unique attributes such as speed and handling which will determine how well they perform on the track. Players must then choose from five different tracks: Daytona International Speedway, North Wilkesboro Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway and Talladega Superspeedway.
Once a track has been chosen players can begin their race. The objective is simple; race around the track as fast as possible while avoiding other drivers who are also trying to win the race. During each race players will be able to use their car’s special abilities such as turbo boost or drafting to gain an advantage over their opponents. Additionally players can adjust their car’s settings before each race including tire pressure and gearing depending on the type of track they are racing on.
Players can compete in single races or take part in a championship where they will compete against all twelve drivers for overall points throughout multiple races. Points are awarded based on a player’s position in each race with first place earning twenty points down to twelfth place earning one point. At the end of the championship season the player with the most points is crowned champion.
Bill Elliott’s NASCAR Challenge was praised upon release for its realistic handling and graphics as well as its accurate representation of real life NASCAR racing at that time period. The game also received positive reviews due to its difficulty level which made it enjoyable for both casual gamers and more experienced players alike. The game was eventually followed up by two sequels released in 1993; Bill Elliott’s NASCAR Fast Tracks Racing (NES) and Bill Elliott’s NASCAR Heat (Sega Genesis). While neither sequel matched up to the original in terms of critical reception they still managed to capture some of what made this classic so great while introducing some new features such as improved graphics and car customization options respectively.
