Yu-Gi-Oh! – The Eternal Duelist Soul is a popular video game released by Konami for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance in 2002. It is based on the popular Japanese manga and anime series, Yu-Gi-Oh!, which follows the adventures of Yugi Moto as he battles other duelists using a variety of monsters and spells. The game was a success, selling over 1 million copies worldwide and spawning two sequels, Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide Edition: Stairway to the Destined Duel (2003) and Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction (2004).
The Eternal Duelist Soul gives players the chance to experience the world of Yu-Gi-Oh in an interactive way. Players take control of Yugi Moto or one of his friends as they battle against computer opponents and each other in duels that use cards from the official Yu-Gi-Oh card game. The game features over 800 cards from the original card set, with additional cards being unlocked as players progress through the single player campaign. In addition to duels with computer opponents, players can also challenge their friends via link cable or local wireless connection.
The single player campaign consists of 8 different tournaments, each featuring several rounds where players must defeat their opponents to advance. As well as earning new cards for their decks, players will also unlock special items which can be used during duels to give them an edge over their opponent. These include spell/trap cards such as “Raigeki” which inflict large amounts of damage on enemy monsters, or “Mirror Force” which destroys all opposing monsters when activated. As well as these powerful cards there are also weaker support cards such as “Gravity Bind” which stops enemy monsters from attacking for one turn, or “Scapegoat” which summons 4 weak sheep tokens onto your side of the field when activated.
The game also features a number of mini games that can be accessed between duels in order to give players a break from battling. These include a slot machine mini game where you can win coins that can be exchanged for booster packs containing additional cards for your deck; a puzzle mini game where you have to match blocks together before time runs out; and a speed duel mini game where you must quickly select the correct card within a limited amount of time in order to win points and increase your score multiplier.
The Eternal Duelist Soul offers an enjoyable experience for both newcomers and experienced fans alike. Players who are unfamiliar with either the anime series or card game will find it easy enough to pick up thanks to its user friendly interface and tutorial system; while veteran duelists will appreciate its faithful recreation of many aspects from both media formats including characters, dialogue, music and art style. Overall it is an excellent title that provides hours upon hours of entertainment for those looking for something more than just another trading card game experience on their Game Boy Advance console.
