Shadow Squadron is a video game that was released in 1994 for the Sega 32X console. It is a flight combat simulator set in an alternate future where Earth has been invaded by an alien race known as the Valkorians. The player takes on the role of a pilot who is part of the Shadow Squadron, a group of elite pilots tasked with defending Earth from the Valkorian menace.
The game features three different modes: Campaign, Skirmish and Battle. In Campaign mode, the player must complete various missions to progress through the story. Missions range from simple dogfights to more complex objectives such as escorting ships or destroying enemy bases. The player can also choose between different aircrafts and can upgrade their plane's weapons and armor with credits earned in-game.
In Skirmish mode, players take on randomly generated missions against AI enemies in either one-on-one or team battles. This mode allows players to hone their skills before taking on the Campaign mode. Finally, Battle Mode lets up to four players compete against each other in head-to-head combat using split-screen multiplayer or link cable connection.
The graphics are detailed and colorful and feature realistic 3D models for all aircrafts and environments. The sound effects are also well done and add to the atmosphere of intense air battles. The controls are easy to learn but take some time to master, especially when it comes to performing advanced maneuvers like barrel rolls or looping around enemies.
Overall, Shadow Squadron is an enjoyable yet challenging flight combat simulator that offers plenty of replay value thanks to its multiple modes and upgrades system. Its visuals may not be groundbreaking but they still manage to create an immersive experience that will keep you coming back for more aerial dogfights with your friends or AI opponents.
