Darxide is a shoot 'em up video game developed by Frontier Developments and published by Sega for the Sega 32X in 1995. The game is set in space, where the player controls a ship which must battle against an alien race.
The objective of Darxide is to defeat all enemies on each level using the ship’s guns, bombs and other special weapons. The player must also collect power-ups scattered throughout the levels that increase the ship's shield strength, speed and firing rate. As well as this they must avoid enemy fire and navigate through hazardous environments such as asteroid fields or other obstacles.
The game features two modes of play: Arcade mode and Simulation mode. Arcade mode allows the player to progress through levels quickly with limited control over their ship, while Simulation mode allows for more detailed control over the ship, with extra challenges such as navigation around obstacles or avoiding enemy fire.
The game features multiple levels, each increasing in difficulty, with different objectives for each one. On some levels it may be necessary to destroy an enemy base or a particular enemy target; on others it may require rescuing stranded astronauts or navigating treacherous terrain. As the player progresses through these levels they will gain access to new weapons and power-ups which can help them complete their mission more quickly or easily.
Darxide also features a multiplayer mode allowing two players to compete against each other in split-screen battles using ships that have been customised with various upgrades that can be acquired from playing through single-player missions. In addition to this there are a number of bonus levels which can be unlocked by completing certain objectives during gameplay.
Overall Darxide is an enjoyable shooter experience with plenty of challenge and variety across its multiple missions and modes of play. The graphics are colourful and vibrant, while sound effects add to the atmosphere of space exploration and combat. With its unique blend of classic arcade shooting action combined with modern touches such as customisable ships and bonus levels it provides hours of fun for those who enjoy shoot 'em up games on their Sega 32X console.
