Valis, released for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive in 1991, is an action platformer game developed by Telenet Japan and published by Renovation Products. It is the first installment of the Valis series and follows protagonist Yuuko Asou as she embarks on a quest to save her world from an evil entity known as Rogles.
The story begins with Yuuko living a peaceful life until one day when her friend Yuko is taken away by Rogles, an evil being who seeks to take over their world of Valis. In order to save her friend and restore peace, Yuuko must use her newfound powers of the legendary Valis Sword to fight off Rogles’ forces. With guidance from a mysterious voice, Yuuko sets out on an epic journey across four different realms: Earth, Heaven, Hell and Dreamland. Along the way she will face many powerful enemies such as demons and robots while also gaining new weapons and power-ups. She will also meet allies that will help her on her quest, such as the magical fairy Reiko or the brave swordsman Rastan.
Gameplay consists of side-scrolling stages where players have to defeat enemies using Yuuko's sword or other weapons found throughout the levels. Players can also find items that can be used to upgrade their character’s stats or obtain special abilities such as double jumping or flying. The game includes boss fights at the end of each level where players have to defeat powerful foes in order to progress further into the story.
Valis was well received upon its release with critics praising its graphics and sound design along with its challenging gameplay and engaging storyline. The game has since gone on to become a cult classic among fans of retro gaming with some citing it as one of the greatest games ever made for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console.
