It is one of the first true console RPGs and helped set the standard for future games in the genre.
Players begin their journey on Mota, a planet composed of four distinct continents: Kabu Kingdom, Zi Isle, Uzo Island, and Miles. For centuries these lands have coexisted in relative peace until recently when one of the legendary Guardians of Algo (protector of worlds) awakened to its power—the biomonsters began to rampage across Motavia Acore, destroying villages and leaving death in their wake. The player takes on the role of Rolf, a young adventurer who displays exceptional potential as a savior of his land - tasked with finding out why Algo has been affected by a mysterious force known as 'Mother Brain.' As Rolf travels from continent to continent he will meet friends and enlist their help in his quest—Elvandia Sue Elliese is a celebrated magician from Zi who helps guide him along his journey; Lutz serves as advisor from afar; Kain Blueriver is an experienced pilot who can traverse challenging terrain; Rudger Nimbus is a brilliant weaponsmith from Kabu Kingdom; Hahn Mahlay befriends Rolf later in the game; Amy Sage Lystell is a fortune-teller based at Miles Depot; Hapsby provides essential services at homebaseand Gwyn/Cyra Stark falls under Rolf's protection during Act 2 of the game. These characters assist Rolf on his mission to restore balance to Algo while protecting its inhabitants.
The battle system requires tactics and strategy while dealing with different types of enemies ranging from robotic creatures like SALto deadly biomechanical life forms like Barong. By defeating these enemies, players can earn experience points towards character growth: upon leveling up they choose which attributes increase (characteristics like HP or PP). Crafting bolster characters' stats even further through upgrading items or combining components into rare pieces they can use during encountersin order to gain an advantage against more powerful adversaries.
