Paperboy II is an action-adventure game developed by Mindscape for the Sega Genesis Mega Drive. The game was released in 1992, a sequel to the original Paperboy released in 1985 and exclusive to Sega devices. In Paperboy II, the gameplay and backstory are greatly expanded upon in comparison to the first title.
Players take on the role of a new paperboy, tasked with delivering newspapers before dawn while avoiding obstacles such as jack-o’-lanterns, kids with water balloons, moving cars, cats chasing butterflies and more. Through completing all levels successfully, players work their way through progressively harder neighborhoods. This time around, players can also select one of three different levels; Classic Mode (similar to the original game), Panic Mode (where the paperboy must pursue a villain) or Rampage Mode (which features a 2D side-scrolling format).
At its core, Paperboy II remains true to its predecessor with basic yet extremely engaging gameplay that relies heavily on reflexes and accuracy. The objective is simple: stay alive whilst delivering as many papers as possible during each attempt. To help manage this task, players are provided with two power ups which act as bonuses - Extra Life gives extra lives while Turbo Boost increases speed at 6x regular pace. Additionally, power meters reside at both top corners of the screen and are filled every time a newspaper is delivered successfully; once full they activate special items depending on which mode it is played in - Classic Mode grants warp tokens for skipping difficult parts of maps whilst Panic/Rampage Modes add a boost of speed or temporary invincibility respectively.
Solid play control is at the forefront of Paperboy II's appeal and provides an overall smooth experience regardless of what gadget you choose to play it on. Additionnally pleasing pixel art coupled with bouncy 8-bit soundtracks give it an distinct old school feel making it nostalgically enjoyable even today. With exponentially increasing difficulty stages accompanied by randomness elements that keep each run unpredictable alongside ample use of bonuses/powerups deserving plenty skillful management - this Sega Genesis Mega Drive classic stands out as a pioneer in semi-infinite gaming experiences that must be enjoyed by everyone at least once!
