Columns is a puzzle video game developed and published by Sega for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive console. The game was first released in 1990 and was later ported to other platforms such as the Game Gear, Sega Master System, and Sega Saturn.
In Columns, the player controls a small diamond-shaped cursor that can be moved left or right along the bottom of the playfield. The goal of the game is to match three or more gems of the same color, which causes them to disappear and any gems above them to fall down and fill the empty space. The player must prevent the gems from reaching the top of the playfield, as doing so will result in a game over.
The game features three different modes: Flash Columns, which is a timed mode where the player must clear a certain number of gems before time runs out; Flash Columns II, which is a similar mode with a different layout; and Endless Columns, which is a more traditional mode where the player tries to survive for as long as possible without the gems reaching the top of the playfield.
Columns also features a two-player mode where players can compete against each other in a split-screen format. In this mode, players take turns dropping gems and try to outscore each other.
The game features colorful and vibrant graphics, with different gems and backgrounds to keep things interesting. The music and sound effects are also well-done, adding to the overall atmosphere of the game.
Overall, Columns is a classic puzzle game that is easy to pick up and play, but difficult to master. It's a great game for both casual and hardcore players and is still enjoyable to play today. The game's simple mechanics and fast-paced gameplay make it a perfect choice for short bursts of gaming or longer sessions. It's definitely a game worth checking out for fans of puzzle games and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.
