The game begins with Papa Smurf receiving a letter from his lost grandchild, asking him to come visit them. Unfortunately, they don't specify where they are located! As a result, Papa must travel to various places around the world in order to locate them. Along the way, he must face off against numerous enemies and obstacles that stand in his way. He can gain access to new levels by collecting special items scattered throughout each stage.
Gameplay consists of navigating through various side-scrolling levels while avoiding or defeating enemies such as gargoyles, bats and spiders. Papa also has access to several items that can help him on his quest such as a magic hat that can turn him into an invincible giant or an umbrella that can be used to glide across gaps between platforms. There are also bonus stages which award extra points if completed successfully.
The graphics for the game are simple but colorful and detailed enough for players to be able to distinguish between different characters and items.
