The objective of Puyo Puyo is to clear all of the colored blocks from the playing field by arranging them into groups of four or more of the same color. If a player cannot clear all the blocks before they reach the top of the screen, they lose the round.

These garbage blocks can only be cleared by making chains with them; if left unchecked, they can quickly overwhelm an opponent’s playing field and cause them to lose prematurely. Players also have access to various power-ups which can be used to turn regular pieces into special blocks with powerful effects such as clearing out large sections at once or temporarily changing an opponent’s playing field into one big mess of garbage pieces.

Puyo Puyo features several different modes including Story Mode, where players progress through increasingly difficult levels while competing against various opponents; versus mode for head-to-head competition; time attack mode for single-player score challenges; practice mode where players can hone their skills without any pressure; and puzzle mode where players are presented with unique scenarios that require careful planning to solve within a certain number of moves.
