Asterix and the Great Rescue is a platform game released on the Sega Game Gear in 1994, based on the popular French comic book series Asterix. The game follows Asterix and Obelix on their quest to rescue their friend Getafix from the Romans. Players take control of Asterix as he travels through various levels, fighting off enemies and solving puzzles.
The game begins with Asterix and Obelix discussing Getafix's disappearance, who has been captured by Romans for his magical powers. To save him, they must travel across Gaul to find clues and items that will help them reach Rome. Along the way they'll encounter a variety of enemies including Roman legionnaires, wild boars, birds, and other creatures. In addition to defeating enemies with punches, kicks and throwing objects at them, players can also collect items such as helmets which grant extra protection against enemy attacks.
Each level is split into two parts – a side-scrolling platforming section where players guide Asterix from left to right while avoiding or defeating enemies; and a puzzle-solving section where players must use collected items to solve various puzzles in order to progress. The goal of each level is to reach the end without being defeated or running out of time; if either happens then the player must restart from the beginning of the level.
In addition to this single-player mode there is also a two-player cooperative mode where one player controls Asterix while the other takes control of Obelix. This adds an extra layer of strategy as both characters must work together in order to progress through each level.
Overall, Asterix and The Great Rescue is an enjoyable platformer with fun puzzles and plenty of replayability thanks to its multiple difficulty levels and two-player mode. While it may not be as visually impressive as some other games on the Game Gear it still offers an enjoyable experience for fans of both the comic books and platformers alike.
