Spider-Man & Venom: Separation Anxiety is a side-scrolling action-adventure video game developed by Acclaim Studios London and published by Acclaim Entertainment for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game was released in North America in 1994, and features two playable characters, Spider-Man and his nemesis, Venom.
The story of the game follows Spider-Man as he attempts to stop Venom from stealing an experimental device called the “Symbiote Reactor” which can be used to create more symbiotes like himself. As Spider-Man progresses through each level, he must battle various enemies such as thugs, robots, aliens, and other super villains. Along with fighting off these enemies, Spider-Man must also collect items to upgrade his abilities such as web cartridges that allow him to shoot webs at a faster rate or health capsules that give him extra hit points. In addition to this, Spider-Man must also solve puzzles throughout the levels to progress further into the game.
Venom’s portion of the game follows a similar format but with some differences; instead of collecting items and solving puzzles, Venom must feed on civilians in order to build up his strength. He also has access to special moves such as throwing people at enemies or using his symbiote tentacles to attack them from afar.
Throughout both stories there are multiple boss battles which require quick reflexes and strategy in order to defeat them. After completing each level there is a cutscene which explains what happened during that stage of the story and how it ties into the overall plot of stopping Venom from stealing the Symbiote Reactor.
The graphics featured in this game are quite impressive for its time; the sprites for both Spider-Man and Venom look very detailed and animate smoothly when they move around the screen. The backgrounds are also very well done with lots of bright colours making it feel like you are actually inside a comic book world. The music featured in this game is also quite good; it has a high energy feel which fits perfectly with all of the action taking place on screen.
Overall Spider-Man & Venom: Separation Anxiety is an enjoyable action adventure title that provides hours of entertainment for fans of both Marvel Comics characters. It features great graphics and sound effects along with challenging gameplay that will keep players engaged throughout their entire playthrough experience. Despite being over 25 years old now it still stands out as one of the better titles available on Super Nintendo system due to its interesting storyline and engaging gameplay mechanics.
