Romance of the Three Kingdoms II is a turn-based strategy game released in 1993 by Koei for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game is set in the turbulent period of Chinese history known as the Three Kingdoms (220–280 AD). Players assume the role of one of twelve different warlords and must conquer their rivals to become Emperor of China.
The gameplay consists of building up your kingdom, managing resources, engaging in diplomacy with other rulers, and engaging in warfare. In addition to choosing which warlord you will play as, players can also choose between a normal or hard difficulty setting. The Normal difficulty setting is more accessible to newcomers, while Hard mode provides a challenge for experienced players.
Players must manage their finances by collecting taxes from their subjects, constructing various buildings to improve their economy, and investing in military forces to expand their power. They must also build up an army with officers who specialize in different types of warfare such as infantry or cavalry. Each officer has unique attributes that affect how they perform on the battlefield. Other features include diplomatic negotiations with other rulers and special events that can be triggered by certain actions taken by players during the game.
The player’s ultimate goal is to achieve unification of China under their rule. To do this they must conquer all rival warlords and gain control over all provinces in China through diplomacy or warfare. Once this has been accomplished, players are given the title “Emperor” and are presented with an ending cinematic sequence showing them being crowned Emperor of China.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms II offers an immersive experience into ancient Chinese history and culture as well as challenging strategic gameplay that will keep gamers engaged for hours on end. With its intuitive controls and detailed graphics, it is easy to see why Romance of the Three Kingdoms II continues to be a classic among strategy games fans even after 25 years since its initial release
