Gemfire is a turn-based strategy game released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1991. Developed and published by Koei, Gemfire is set in a fantasy world of warring nations, and players take on the role of a lord in one of the six realms. The objective of the game is to conquer the other five realms by building castles and armies, capturing enemy lords, or achieving diplomatic victory through alliances with other nations.
The game is played on an overhead map divided into hexagonal grids representing various geographical regions. Players move their armies around this map, engaging in combat with enemy forces as well as constructing new castles and towns to expand their kingdom’s influence. Each region has its own unique terrain which affects movement and combat; for example mountains provide protection from attack while forests slow down movement. Building structures such as castles also provides additional bonuses to armies occupying them such as increased defense or magical spells that can be used during combat.
Combat takes place in a separate battle screen where each side takes turns moving their units around an 8x8 grid. Units consist of infantry, cavalry, archers, and siege engines which have different strengths and weaknesses depending on their type. Combat is resolved through dice rolls which determine how much damage each unit inflicts upon its opponent; however magical spells can give players an advantage during battle if they are cast at the right moment. After each round of combat any surviving units are returned to the main map while dead units are removed from play permanently.
Players also have access to special characters called “generals” who can be hired to lead armies into battle or act as diplomats when dealing with other nations. Generals come with special abilities based on their class such as increased attack power or improved diplomacy skills; however they must be paid wages regularly or else they may desert the player’s cause!
In addition to conquering territory players must also manage resources such as food and gold which are necessary for sustaining troops during wartime or constructing new buildings in their kingdom. Resources can be acquired by producing them within your own kingdom or trading with other nations via diplomatic negotiations or military conquest.
Gemfire was praised upon its release for its addictive gameplay and strategic depth; it was even awarded GamePro magazine’s “Editor’s Choice Award” for being one of the best games available at the time! While it may not have achieved mainstream success like some of Koei’s other titles it remains a beloved classic among strategy fans today thanks to its deep yet accessible gameplay mechanics that still hold up over 25 years later!
