The game takes place in 1792, in the fictional country of Transylvania. Players take control of Richter Belmont as they explore and battle through a variety of levels set across the country. The levels themselves are divided into two distinct parts: an overworld map and side-scrolling stages. The overworld map contains various locations such as villages, castles and forests where players can find items and access sub-levels. The side-scrolling stages contain enemies and obstacles which must be overcome in order to progress through each level.
Richter has access to a variety of weapons throughout the game, including his trademark whip and several magical spells. These weapons can be used to defeat enemies or interact with certain objects within each stage. Additionally, Richter can also collect hearts which act as currency for purchasing items from merchants or upgrading existing equipment at churches.
The main objective of Castlevania - Vampire’s Kiss is to traverse each level while defeating enemies along the way and eventually reach Dracula’s castle at the end of the game. Once there, players must face off against Dracula himself in an epic final battle before confronting Annette and rescuing her from her captor.
