Battletoads & Double Dragon – The Ultimate Team is a crossover beat 'em up video game developed by Rare and published by Tradewest for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1993. It was later ported to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1994. As its title suggests, the game features characters from both the Battletoads and Double Dragon franchises.
The game follows the same basic format of other side-scrolling beat 'em ups, in which players take control of one or two characters as they battle their way through various levels filled with enemies. Unlike most games of its type, however, Ultimate Team allows players to switch between characters on the fly, allowing them to use different attack styles and strategies depending on who they are controlling at any given time. The game also features a unique “team attack” system where two players can combine their attacks to create a powerful move that can quickly clear out large groups of enemies.
The game’s story revolves around a mysterious group known as “The Shadow Warriors” who have kidnapped Billy and Jimmy Lee (the protagonists from Double Dragon). It is up to Rash, Zitz and Pimple (the protagonists from Battletoads) to team up with each other and rescue them. Along the way, they will come across various enemies from both franchises including The Dark Queen, Abobo and Big Blag.
In terms of graphics, Ultimate Team offers an impressive level of detail for its time; characters are well animated with plenty of frames of animation for each one, while backgrounds are nicely detailed with plenty of objects to interact with. The music is also quite good; it consists mostly of heavy metal tracks that fit the action perfectly.
Overall, Battletoads & Double Dragon – The Ultimate Team is an enjoyable beat 'em up that offers something new with its character switching system while still staying true to what makes these types of games fun. Its graphics and sound are also quite impressive for its time making it a great pick for fans of either franchise looking for some classic brawling action on their SNES or Genesis consoles.
