The game follows the story of an alien race known as the Xenophobes, who have invaded Earth and are attempting to take over. The player takes control of a lone space fighter pilot tasked with defending the planet from these hostile invaders. One thing that sets Xenophobe apart from other shooters at this time is its unique art style; instead of being set in outer space, it takes place in a variety of different environments such as jungles, deserts, and cities. This gives it a much more varied look than most other shooters on the NES at this time.

The controls are also quite intuitive; you can move your ship left or right using the D-pad and shoot with either A or B button. You can also press Start to pause or select to bring up options like sound settings or difficulty level (Easy/Normal/Hard).
