The Uncanny X-Men, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989, is one of the earliest video game adaptations of Marvel's popular comic book series.
Developed by LJN Toys and published by Konami, The Uncanny X-Men was the first in a series of games based on Marvel characters.
In The Uncanny X-Men, players take control of one of five X-Men characters: Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler or Colossus.
The goal is to defeat Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants before they can unleash their ultimate weapon.
To do this, players must navigate levels filled with enemies such as Sentinels and robotic spiders while collecting power-ups and discovering hidden passages.
As they progress through the game's eight levels, players will be able to unlock additional powers such as flight and invincibility.
The game itself has an interesting mix of action and strategy elements; players must balance their attacks against enemies with careful use of their special abilities.
Additionally, each character has unique strengths that must be taken into account when selecting which one to play as; for example, Colossus is strong enough to break through walls while Nightcrawler can teleport across gaps in the level design.
This adds an element of replayability to the game as different strategies can be employed depending on which character is chosen.
Graphically speaking, The Uncanny X-Men features detailed sprites that capture the look and feel of the comic books quite well.
The music isn't too shabby either; it captures some classic 8-bit tunes that should please any fan who remembers playing this classic title back in its heyday.
Overall, The Uncanny X-Men was a decent game for its time; it had solid gameplay mechanics and a good amount of replayability thanks to its varied character selection system.
It may not have been a graphical powerhouse but it was still an enjoyable experience nonetheless – especially if you were a fan of Marvel’s iconic mutants!
