Tombs & Treasure is an action-adventure video game developed by Konami and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1986. It was one of the first games to combine elements of both action and adventure genres, making it a pioneering title in the video game industry.
The player takes on the role of an adventurer who is attempting to recover four pieces of a magical crown from four tombs located throughout the kingdom. To do this, he must explore each tomb and its surrounding areas, fighting monsters, solving puzzles, and collecting items such as keys and treasure chests. Along the way, he will also come across various NPCs who can offer hints or other useful information.
The gameplay consists of two distinct parts: exploration and combat. Exploration involves navigating through mazes while avoiding obstacles such as traps and dead ends. Combat is initiated when enemies are encountered in these mazes; at this point, players must use their weapons to defeat them before they can progress further into the tomb. Throughout their journey, players will be able to find various items that will aid them in their quest, such as healing potions or special weapons that can be used against certain enemies. They may also come across secret passages that lead to hidden areas containing valuable treasures or power-ups that make their character stronger or faster.
The game was well received by critics upon its release for its innovative combination of gameplay elements from both action and adventure genres. Its success would pave the way for future titles with similar design philosophies, including Castlevania and The Legend of Zelda series. Tombs & Treasure is also credited with being one of the earliest examples of a "Metroidvania" game – a subgenre which combines aspects from Metroid and Castlevania games – inspiring many modern titles like Hollow Knight and Axiom Verge. Despite being over thirty years old, Tombs & Treasure remains an influential title in gaming history due to its innovative design philosophy which continues to influence developers today.
