The game consists of five levels: two on Earth, two in outer space, and one in Hell. Each level is composed of platforming stages connected by labyrinths filled with monsters and traps. In each stage, the player must reach the exit while avoiding or defeating enemies and collecting power-ups such as invincibility stars and extra lives. Once all four pieces of armor are collected, the player can challenge the final boss who guards the portal between worlds.
The gameplay is similar to other NES platformers such as Super Mario Bros., but with a few unique twists. The player can collect special items that allow them to transform into various animals including birds, fish, frogs, turtles, and even dragons! These transformations give the player access to areas otherwise unreachable as well as new abilities such as swimming or flying. Additionally, there are hidden passages throughout each level that require specific animal forms in order to be accessed.
Time Lord also features an interesting “time warp” feature which allows players to travel back in time at certain points during levels in order to reach previously inaccessible areas or gain access to new power-ups or items.
