In 1990, Nintendo held the first ever Nintendo World Championships (NWC). This competition was a celebration of the success of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and featured some of the best players from around the world competing for one of three championship titles. The event was held in Los Angeles, California, and it was televised on the Super Mario Bros. Super Show! television program.
The tournament consisted of three different stages: A qualifying round, a semifinal round, and a final round. During each stage, players competed in three different games: Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris. Players were awarded points based on their performance in each game and after each stage the player with the most points advanced to the next level.
The qualifying round was open to anyone who wanted to participate in the tournament and featured over 5000 players from all over North America. The top 30 players were then selected to advance to the semifinals where they would compete against each other for one of three available spots in the finals.
The semifinalists played a series of four rounds that tested their skill and knowledge in all three games that were part of the tournament. At this point, only four players remained: Thor Aackerlund, Chris Tang, Pat Contri and Robin Mihara. These four finalists then competed against each other in a five-game series which determined who would be crowned champion at Nintendo World Championships 1990.
In an exciting match-up between Thor Aackerlund and Chris Tang, Thor came out victorious as he finished with a total score of 652 points compared to Chris’s 602 points. Thor was crowned champion at Nintendo World Championships 1990 and won himself an exclusive golden NES cartridge along with other prizes including a trip to Disney World for two people plus spending money for hotel accommodations during their stay there.
Overall, the Nintendo World Championship 1990 was an incredible success as it showcased some of North America’s best gamers while also allowing fans around the world to witness some amazing gaming feats by these talented individuals. It also marked an important milestone for competitive gaming as it helped pave the way for future tournaments such as EVO or MLG which are now considered some of today’s biggest esports events worldwide.
