Monster Party is an 8-bit run and gun video game developed by Human Entertainment and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989. The game follows a young boy named Mark on his journey to save the world from monsters. Players must battle through seven levels of action-packed platforming, using various weapons and items to defeat monsters and progress through the levels.
The story of Monster Party begins with a young boy named Mark who is visited by an alien named Bert who has come to Earth to warn him about an evil force known as “the Dark King”. Bert informs Mark that he must collect three sacred items in order to save the world from the Dark King’s reign. With Bert’s help, Mark sets out on a quest to retrieve these items, which are scattered across seven different levels.
The gameplay of Monster Party is similar to many other classic 8-bit side-scrolling games of its era, such as Super Mario Bros., Mega Man, and Castlevania. Players control Mark as he runs and jumps his way across each level while battling an array of monsters such as zombies, bats, skeletons, ghosts, mummies, dragons, and more. Along the way players can use a variety of weapons such as baseball bats, boomerangs, throwing stars, fireballs and bombs which can be obtained by collecting power-ups found throughout each stage. Additionally players can also make use of special items such as shields which will protect them from enemy attacks or invincibility stars which will grant them temporary invulnerability against enemies.
The graphics featured in Monster Party are colorful yet simple 8-bit sprites that have been cleverly designed with plenty of detail that still holds up today despite its age. The soundtrack is composed entirely with chiptune music that fits perfectly with the overall look and feel of the game while providing some great background music along the way.
Overall Monster Party is a great example of classic 8-bit gaming at its best with plenty of action packed platforming gameplay combined with colorful graphics that remain enjoyable even today thanks to its unique style and catchy soundtrack. While it may not be one of the most popular games for fans of classic gaming it certainly deserves recognition for being one of the most creative titles released for the NES in its time period
