Players assume the role of either Riggs or Murtaugh as they battle their way through five stages set around various locations in Los Angeles, such as a skyscraper, a police station, and a junkyard.
The objective of Lethal Weapon is to progress through each stage by fighting off enemies with punches and kicks while collecting weapons to aid in battle. As players progress further into the game, they will encounter more powerful enemies that require stronger weapons to defeat. Along with punching and kicking, players can also jump over obstacles and pick up items including health power-ups which restore life points. In addition to the main levels, there are also several bonus stages which can be accessed by entering secret doorways scattered throughout the levels.
The visuals for Lethal Weapon are colorful and detailed, taking full advantage of the NES’s 8-bit graphics capabilities. Each level contains its own unique set of enemies that vary in size, ranging from small street thugs to large bosses at the end of each stage.
