Klax is an action puzzle game developed and published by Atari Games for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The game was released in 1990 and was one of the first titles to be released on the NES. Klax is a puzzle game where players must arrange colored tiles that fall from the top of the screen into stacks of three or more of the same color. If a stack reaches the goal line at the bottom, points are earned and a new level begins with faster falling tiles.
The object of Klax is to earn as many points as possible by stacking colored tiles which fall from the top of the screen into rows, columns or diagonals of 3 or more matching colors. When this happens, these tiles are destroyed and points are awarded based on how many were in each row, column or diagonal. The player can also earn bonus points for making multiple matches in succession as well as for clearing all tiles from the board before they reach the bottom. To make things more challenging, tiles come in different sizes and shapes, some with special abilities such as bombs which can clear away large sections of tiles when matched.
Klax has five levels with increasing difficulty; each level has its own set of rules that must be followed to progress. For example, Level 1 requires three-in-a-rows while Level 2 requires four-in-a-row and so on. Players have a limited number of lives which will decrease if too many tiles reach the bottom without being cleared away. The game ends when all lives are lost or when no more moves can be made on any level.
Klax offers two modes: Arcade Mode where players must complete each level within a certain time limit; and Puzzle Mode where they must complete puzzles using only a limited number of pieces per board. The game also features several power ups that can help players progress through levels quicker; these include extra lives, slow down time and even reverse gravity mode which allows them to rearrange their pieces in mid air!
Klax was well received upon release due to its addictive gameplay and challenging puzzles. It’s still popular today among retro gamers due to its simple yet effective mechanics which provide hours of entertainment.
