The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is a home video game console created by Nintendo and released in North America in 1985. It was the first successful console to use cartridges instead of discs, allowing for much greater storage capacity and far more games than its competitors. The NES was incredibly popular during the late 1980s and early 1990s, selling over 61 million units worldwide. It was also responsible for reviving the video game industry after the crash of 1983.
The NES came packaged with two controllers, a power adapter, an RF switch box, and a light gun known as "Zapper". The controllers were simple 8-way directional pads with two buttons each. The power adapter allowed users to plug the console into any wall outlet. The RF switch box allowed users to connect the NES to their television without needing additional equipment. Finally, the Zapper allowed players to shoot enemies onscreen using infrared technology.
The NES featured several groundbreaking games that have since become classics such as Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania and Punch Out!! Other popular titles included Donkey Kong Jr., Ice Climber, Excitebike and Balloon Fight. Many of these franchises are still popular today and have spawned numerous sequels over the years.
Nintendo also developed many accessories for the system such as the Power Pad which allowed players to simulate running or dancing on screen; R.O.B., an automated robot that could play certain games; and various light guns for shooting games like Duck Hunt or Hogan’s Alley. A variety of third-party companies also produced peripherals such as joysticks and steering wheels for racing games like Rad Racer or F1 Race.
The NES brought gaming into homes all over the world in a way that had never been seen before. Its success paved the way for future consoles such as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Sega Genesis and PlayStation 1 & 2 which would go on to revolutionize gaming even further in years to come. To this day, it remains one of Nintendo’s most beloved systems due to its classic library of titles that continue to be enjoyed by gamers young and old alike across all generations
