Hoops is a basketball video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

It was released in North America in October 1988, and in Europe in March 1989.

The game was one of the first to feature a three-dimensional perspective, with players being able to move up and down the court.

The game is played from an overhead perspective, with two teams of five players each competing on a basketball court.

Players can select from one of four teams: the Home Team, Away Team, Red Team, or Blue Team.

Each team consists of five players: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center.

Players must use their team's five players to score points by shooting baskets from various positions on the court.

The goal is to outscore your opponent before time runs out.

Players can also use special moves such as spin shots and jump shots to gain an advantage over their opponents.

Additionally, they can call plays such as fast breaks and pick-and-rolls to create scoring opportunities for their team.

Power-ups are scattered throughout the court which grant temporary abilities such as invincibility or increased speed when collected by a player.

These power-ups can be used strategically to gain an edge during gameplay.

Hoops features multiple modes of play including practice mode which allows players to practice their skills without opponents; tournament mode where two teams compete against each other; and challenge mode where one player takes on various computer-controlled teams with increasing difficulty levels.

There is also a head-to-head mode where two human players can compete against each other using either split screen or alternating turns style play.

The game also features multiple options that allow players to customize their experience such as selecting different courts (indoor or outdoor), adjusting the speed of gameplay (slow or fast), setting time limits for matches (up to 99 minutes) and choosing between day or night settings for enhanced atmosphere and visuals.

The ability for two human players to play together adds even more replayability value since it creates an opportunity for friendly competition amongst friends or family members who may not have access to a real basketball court at home or elsewhere nearby.

Hoops was met with generally positive reviews upon its release in 1988 and has become somewhat of a cult classic among basketball fans ever since then due its unique take on the sport combined with its simple yet engaging gameplay mechanics.

Even today it remains relatively easy to find copies of this classic NES title either online or at local video game stores thanks in part to its lasting popularity among gamers who grew up playing it back in the late 80s/early 90s era when it first came out on Nintendo’s then revolutionary 8-bit console system .

Hoops continues to provide hours of fun for those who still enjoy playing old school 8 bit titles like this one!
