Goonies II, The is a side-scrolling action-adventure video game developed by Konami and released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987. The game is based on the 1985 movie of the same name and follows the same basic plot. Players take control of Mikey, a young boy who sets out to rescue his friends from the Fratelli family. The game features seven levels, each with its own unique theme, enemies and obstacles to overcome.
Players begin their journey in Mikey’s hometown of Astoria, Oregon. In this level they must traverse through a forest full of dangerous animals and make their way to their first destination: an abandoned shipwreck. During this level players will have to battle against bats, snakes and other creatures while avoiding traps and pitfalls. Upon reaching the shipwreck they will meet up with two members of the Fratelli family who are holding Mikey’s friends hostage inside. In order to save them Mikey must battle his way through four more levels that feature various locations such as an ice cave, a mine shaft and an underground lake before finally confronting Mama Fratelli at her hideout in Level 7.
The gameplay in Goonies II is similar to that of many other side-scrolling action-adventure games of its time; however it also contains some unique elements such as power ups that can be collected throughout each stage or earned by defeating certain enemies. These power ups can give Mikey extra health or special abilities such as being able to shoot fireballs or even fly for a limited amount of time. Additionally there are several hidden items scattered throughout each level which can help players progress further in their quest or even unlock bonus areas with additional rewards.
Overall Goonies II is an enjoyable game that captures the spirit of the movie it’s based on very well. Its simple yet challenging gameplay combined with its colorful visuals make it an enjoyable experience for all ages to enjoy. Although it may not be as well known as some other NES classics from its era, Goonies II is definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a fun adventure game with plenty of challenge and nostalgia thrown in for good measure!
