Championship Pool for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is a classic arcade-style pool game released by Konami in 1988.
The game was released on both the NES and the Game Boy, and was one of the earliest pool games available for home consoles.
Championship Pool is a two-dimensional top-down view of a standard 8-ball table, with players taking turns to shoot their balls at each other’s targets.
The game features an array of options, allowing players to customize their experience by changing the angle and speed of their shots, as well as selecting from different table sizes and shot styles.
The game features four different modes: Exhibition Mode, Tournament Mode, Practice Mode, and Trick Shots.
In Exhibition Mode, two players can compete against each other in a regular 8-ball match on any size table.
Tournament Mode allows up to four players to compete in either 8-ball or 9-ball matches on any size table.
Practice Mode allows players to practice their skills on any size table without an opponent present.
Finally, Trick Shots mode allows players to attempt difficult shots in order to boost their score.
Each player takes turns shooting at their opponent’s target balls until one player has sunk all of theirs.
If a player sinks one of their own balls before sinking all of their opponent’s, they are penalized with a loss of points equal to the value of that ball.
If a player sinks an opponent’s ball while attempting to sink one of theirs, they receive no penalty but also no points for that shot either.
The first player to sink all of their target balls wins the game.
Championship Pool has been praised for its realistic physics engine and detailed visuals which accurately recreate the look and feel of real pool tables and cues.
The graphics are fairly basic but still manage to capture the atmosphere and excitement associated with playing pool; however they can be considered somewhat dated compared to more modern pool games such as Virtual Pool 3 or Pro Pool 2K2.
Championship Pool also features some simple sound effects which add some atmosphere but don't really add much else; however these are easily forgotten due to its otherwise enjoyable gameplay experience.
Overall Championship Pool is an enjoyable title which is still fun today despite its age; it may not be as visually impressive or feature packed as more modern titles but it definitely captures that classic pool hall vibe perfectly and provides hours upon hours of entertainment for those looking for an authentic pool experience on the NES console system!
