Baseball Stars is a classic baseball game developed by SNK and released on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1989. The game features two teams of four players each, with the player controlling one team and the computer controlling the other. The game has several different modes, including an exhibition mode, a season mode, and a tournament mode.
The exhibition mode allows the player to choose between two teams for a single match. The season mode allows the player to create their own team and compete against other teams over the course of a 30-game season. The tournament mode is similar to season mode but instead of playing against other teams, it pits one team against itself in a series of three games.
The gameplay consists of batting and pitching mechanics that are fairly realistic for an 8-bit era sports game. Players can select from several different pitches such as fastballs, curveballs, sliders, knuckleballs and changeups. When batting, players can choose from several different swing types including power swings or contact swings in order to try to hit the ball out of the park or get on base with singles or walks. Fielding is also included in the game with players able to move their fielders around in order to catch fly balls or grounders.
Baseball Stars features multiple teams that are represented by cartoonish characters such as “The Bulldogs” and “The Aliens” which adds some flavor to the game. There are also several stadiums scattered throughout Japan that represent real-life locations such as Tokyo Dome and Koshien Stadium which adds further realism to the game. There are also multiple difficulty levels available for players who want more challenging matches or easier ones depending on their skill level.
Overall Baseball Stars was an innovative sports title for its time and provided an enjoyable experience for fans of baseball video games during its time period. Although it may not have aged well compared to modern day sports titles it still remains an iconic NES title that many remember fondly today.
