Toxic Crusaders is a side-scrolling action game based on the animated television series of the same name.
The game was released in 1992 for the Nintendo Game Boy, and it follows the adventures of Toxie, a mutant superhero who fights against pollution and toxic waste.
The game was developed by Japanese developer Natsume, and it was published by Bandai Co., Ltd.
in Japan and Ocean Software in Europe.
The story of Toxic Crusaders follows Toxie, an average guy mutated into a superhero after being exposed to toxic waste from an industrial plant.
He gains superhuman strength and agility as well as a pair of powerful arms that can shoot balls of toxic waste at his enemies.
He is joined by fellow mutants such as No-Zone, Junkyard, Headbanger, Dr Killemoff and Major Disaster in their mission to rid the world of pollution and toxic waste.
Together they face off against enemies such as Dr Killemoff's henchmen, alien invaders from outer space and giant monsters created from chemical reactions caused by pollution.
The gameplay consists of side-scrolling levels where Toxie must battle his way through hordes of enemies while collecting power-ups to increase his strength or special items to gain access to new areas.
Toxie also has access to several weapons such as toxic waste balls, fireballs, ice blasts and electric bolts which he can use to defeat his foes or interact with certain objects in the environment.
As Toxie progresses through the levels he will also encounter boss battles which require him to use his special powers or weapons in order to defeat them.
Toxic Crusaders features a unique graphical style that combines both pixel art sprites with more detailed backgrounds drawn with traditional cartoon animation techniques.
The music is composed by Hideki Matsutake who is known for his work on other Natsume titles such as Little Ninja Brothers and The Ninja Warriors Again.
The sound effects are also quite effective at giving each character or enemy type its own distinct sound ranging from comical cartoon noises to more serious tones for boss battles.
Overall Toxic Crusaders is an enjoyable action platformer that fans of classic 8-bit games will definitely appreciate.
With its unique graphic design style, catchy soundtrack and fun gameplay mechanics there’s plenty here for gamers looking for some retro gaming nostalgia on their Game Boy handheld device
