Street Fighter II is one of the most beloved and iconic fighting games of all time. Originally released in 1991, Street Fighter II was an instant hit and spawned numerous sequels, spin-offs, and ports to other systems. The game was originally released as an arcade game but later ported to various home console systems such as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and the Sega Genesis. One of the most interesting versions of Street Fighter II is the Game Boy version.
Released in 1995, Street Fighter II for the Game Boy was a unique experience compared to its console counterparts. Developed by Capcom, this version of Street Fighter II was designed specifically for the Game Boy hardware with some graphical changes and gameplay tweaks. Despite a few changes, this version managed to stay faithful to the original arcade game while still offering something new for fans of the series.
The first thing that players will notice when playing Street Fighter II on Game Boy is that it has been compressed down significantly from its arcade counterpart due to hardware limitations. The visuals have been redrawn with fewer colours and smaller sprites making it look much less detailed than its larger cousins on consoles. Animations are also reduced with some characters having fewer frames or movements than their console counterparts. Despite these changes however, Capcom did manage to keep some of the details intact which helps give some sense of familiarity for those who had played it before on other systems.
Gameplay wise, Street Fighter II on Game Boy manages to stay true to the source material while adding a few extra features here and there. Players can choose from 8 characters (the same selection found in Super Street Fighter II Turbo) including Ryu, Ken, Guile, E Honda, Chun-Li, Zangief, Dhalsim and Blanka each with their own movesets and special attacks. There’s also a 2 player mode where two people can link up two different Game Boys in order to fight against each other which is a nice touch considering how limited multi-player options were at the time on portable systems like Game Boy.
In addition to these features are several new ones exclusive to this version of Street Fighter II such as “Random Select” which allows players to randomly select any character before beginning a match or “Continue Mode” which allows players who lose during fights continue without having to start over again from scratch – both great additions that help make this version stand out amongst others in the series.
Overall Street Fighter II on Game Boy is a great port that manages to capture what made fans love about this classic fighting game while adding some unique touches along with it – making it well worth checking out if you’re looking for an old school fighting experience on your portable system!
