Rolan’s Curse is a classic action-adventure game released for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1991.
Developed by Natsume and published by Taito, Rolan’s Curse was one of the first games to be released on the Game Boy.
The game follows the story of Rolan, a brave warrior who must save his kingdom from an evil force known as the Dark Dragon.
In order to do so, he must journey across four different lands and complete various tasks before confronting and defeating the dragon.
The game itself is divided into four distinct sections: the town of Trell, which serves as the hub for all other areas; three separate lands—the Forest Land, Mountain Land, and Sea Land—each with its own unique set of challenges; and finally, the Tower of Evil at the end where Rolan must face off against his nemesis, the Dark Dragon.
Along his quest, Rolan can collect items such as coins that can be used to purchase items from shops in Trell or weapons that will help him in battle.
He also has access to magical spells that can be used to damage enemies or heal himself when needed.
The gameplay in Rolan’s Curse consists primarily of platforming elements as well as some basic puzzle solving.
As Rolan progresses through each level he will encounter various enemies such as monsters and walking plants that must be defeated using either physical attacks or special spells.
At certain points during levels there are also hidden switches which can open up new pathways or reveal secret items when activated.
In addition to these traditional platforming elements there are also several minigames included in Rolan’s Curse including fishing, whack-a-mole type games, and a side scrolling shooter segment at one point during the game which provides a nice change of pace from time to time.
The graphics on offer are fairly basic but still manage to convey a sense of atmosphere throughout while providing plenty of detail in terms of character designs and enemy sprites alike.
Overall, Rolan’s Curse stands out as an excellent action-adventure title on the Game Boy system due to its solid gameplay mechanics combined with its charming visuals and engaging storyline.
It may not have aged quite as gracefully as some other titles on Nintendo's handheld console but it still remains a fun experience nonetheless and is definitely worth checking out for those looking for an old school adventure on their Game Boy system
