These power-ups are found inside boxes located around the level, which must be opened by hitting them with a newspaper bundle or by jumping on top of them.
If all houses are successfully delivered to then bonus points are awarded based on how many power-ups were used during that level.
Throughout each level there are also various hazards that will cause damage if touched; these include cars, skateboarders, dogs and trash cans that move across the screen at varying speeds depending on difficulty setting chosen at the start of each game.
If any of these obstacles touch you then your health bar will decrease until you run out of health and lose one life; however this can be avoided by using invincibility power-ups or jumping over or around them instead.
The aim of Paperboy is to complete each level without losing any lives; if this is achieved then bonus points will be awarded based on how well you performed during that level (such as how many newspapers were delivered successfully).
