NBA Live 96 is a basketball game for the Nintendo Game Boy released in 1996. Developed by Radical Entertainment, it was one of the first basketball games to be released on a handheld console. It was also one of the earliest games to feature real NBA players and teams, as well as accurate stats from the 1995-96 season.
The game features an overhead view of both sides of the court and allows for two players to compete against each other in either regular exhibition or tournament modes. Players can choose from any of the 27 NBA teams at the time, including rookies such as Allen Iverson and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. The game also features a “Create Player” mode which allows players to customize their own character with up to five attributes.
In terms of gameplay, NBA Live 96 features traditional arcade-style controls with a simple four-button setup: A for pass, B for shoot, Select for steal/block and Start for pause/substitute. The graphics are 2D sprites while sound effects include realistic crowd cheers and commentary from play-by-play announcers Marv Albert and Mike Fratello.
The game also includes several options which allow players to adjust settings such as quarter length and difficulty level. There is also an “All Star” mode which allows players to create their own dream team consisting of any combination of NBA stars past or present.
Overall, NBA Live 96 was a pioneering basketball game that provided hours of entertainment on a portable console at a time when 3D gaming had yet to become widespread on home consoles. Its simple yet deep gameplay mechanics combined with its accurate representation of the 1995-96 season made it an instant hit among fans of both basketball and video games alike.
