College Slam was a basketball video game released for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1995. Developed by Sculptured Software and published by Acclaim Entertainment, College Slam was one of the first basketball video games to feature teams from all over the United States. The game featured several different modes of play, including exhibition matches and tournaments, as well as a special tournament mode that could be played with up to four players.
The game features 8 college teams from around the country, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. In addition to these 8 teams, there are also 12 secret teams which can be unlocked by completing certain objectives in the game. These secret teams include such famous colleges as Harvard, Duke University, Stanford University and more. Each team is composed of five players: two guards, two forwards and one center. The player can select any combination of these positions when creating their team.
In addition to regular exhibition games, College Slam also offers a tournament mode where players can compete against other teams in a single-elimination tournament format. The tournament consists of eight rounds where each team has an opportunity to advance to the next round until one team remains as champion. To make the experience even more realistic, real-life college basketball coaches are featured in the game as commentators during some matches.
The main objective of College Slam is for players to use their skills at offense and defense to outscore their opponents and become champions. Players must be strategic in choosing which shots they take and how aggressively they defend their opponent’s shots in order to win each match.
The controls for College Slam are fairly simple; on offense you have buttons for passing, shooting or stealing; on defense you have buttons for blocking or tackling; and finally there is a turbo button that will increase your movement speed when pressed repeatedly (but beware – using turbo too much will cause fatigue).
Overall College Slam is an enjoyable basketball game that captures many elements of actual college basketball while still being easy enough for gamers of all levels to enjoy playing it. With its unique blend of fast paced action and strategic play it’s no wonder why this classic Game Boy title still receives praise today from both casual gamers and hardcore sports fans alike!
