The Lawnmower Man, released for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1993, is a side-scrolling action-adventure game based on the 1992 science fiction film of the same name. Developed by Ocean Software and published by Mindscape, The Lawnmower Man follows the story of Jobe Smith, a mentally handicapped gardener who is transformed into an intelligent superhuman by an experimental virtual reality program. Players take control of Jobe as he embarks on a journey to save humanity from a powerful artificial intelligence known as "The Shop".
The game begins with Jobe being abducted from his home by agents working for The Shop. After being brought to their secret underground laboratory, The Shop subjects him to intense virtual reality simulations. During these simulations, Jobe gains superhuman strength and intelligence which he uses to fight off enemies and explore vast levels. Along the way he will encounter various puzzles and obstacles that must be solved in order to progress further in the game.
Gameplay consists of traditional platforming elements such as running, jumping, and climbing as well as action elements such as shooting enemies with laser guns or using special power-ups found throughout each level. As players progress through the levels they will encounter bosses that must be defeated before they can move onto the next area. Defeating bosses rewards players with bonus items such as extra lives or health upgrades which can help them complete later levels more easily.
In addition to its single-player campaign mode, The Lawnmower Man also features a multiplayer battle mode where two players can face off against each other in arena-style combat using their unique abilities and weapons. This mode allows for up to four players at once allowing friends or family members to join in on the fun.
Overall, The Lawnmower Man is an enjoyable experience that captures both the spirit of its source material while providing engaging platforming gameplay that still holds up today. It’s unique blend of action and puzzle solving make it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a fun adventure game on their Nintendo Game Boy console.
