Along their journey, they will encounter other tanks that can be recruited into their own squad if they are defeated in battle. These recruits can then be upgraded with new weapons and armor to become more powerful allies in future battles.

Battle Tanx features three distinct types of gameplay: campaign mode, skirmish mode, and tournament mode. In campaign mode, players progress through a series of levels as they work towards completing their final objective: defeating General Plastro or Commander Jones depending on which side they chose at the beginning of the game. Skirmish mode allows players to jump into any level they have previously completed for quick battles against computer-controlled opponents or other human players via link cable connection. Finally, tournament mode pits up to four players against each other in a free-for-all deathmatch style competition for bragging rights as well as bonus items that can be unlocked upon completion of certain levels in campaign mode.
